New Pharma Law came into effect January 1st\u00a0 2021. As Iceland is a member of the EU\u2018s single market via the EEA agreement<\/a><\/u> the law is fully in line with all relevant EU directives and regulations.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 objective\u00a0 of\u00a0 the Act is to ensure a sufficient supply of necessary medicinal products, as efficiently distributed as possible on the basis of fair and equitable competition, and in\u00a0 accordance\u00a0 with\u00a0 the\u00a0 rules\u00a0 which\u00a0 apply\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 European\u00a0 Economic\u00a0 Area.<\/p>\n

It is, furthermore, the objective of the Act and related regulations to ensure as far as possible the quality and\u00a0 safety of medicinal products and services, increase public information on the use of medicinal products, counter their excessive use and keep costs to a minimum \u2013 given the special circumstances of the Icelandic Pharma Market. <\/div>

The Icelandic Medicines Agency<\/a><\/u> is the regulatory authority and is responsible for price- and reimbursement decisions. To meet the objective of \u201ekeep costs to a minimum\u201d, as stated in the Pharma law, the IMA shall take into account price and reimbursement requirements in the Nordic countries.<\/p>\n
